I used a caramel to spread inside it was sweetened condensed milk, butter and 1\/2 cup of sugar.  Melt butter in pan mix in sugar and stir until sludgy like, add sweetened condensed milk and stir constantly on a medium heat or so a low boil or simmer like heat. until color changes and its thickened.  I did spread it directly on the cake while hot and rolled it up boom it was great!
